May be caused by another ECU running a software version incompatible with the version installed on the GTW, a software bug, or external equipment installed onto a CAN bus.

The GTW receives an unrecognized CAN message from another ECU.

When it clears

The GTW no longer receives any unrecognized CAN messages from another ECU. May occur after a successful vehicle software update, if the unexpected message resulted from incompatible software version running on another ECU or a software bug. Otherwise, may require identifying and removing external equipment from a CAN bus.

Potential impact

CAN communication between ECUs, and between the GTW and other ECUs, may be limited or unavailable.
